これらの地域には、素晴らしい伝統工芸、酒蔵、美味しい農産物や魚などの多くの特産品があり、日本海の美しい風景が続く大変魅力的な地域です。そんな美しい地域が、今回の地震によって壊滅的な被害を受けた画像や映像を目にする度に心が痛みます。命を落とされた方、住まいを失われた方、不便な生活を強いられている方、そしていまだに行方不明となられている方が多くいらっしゃるというこの現状に対し、思いを伝える適切な言葉を見つけることができません。道路が寸断されてしまい、多くの地域がいまだに孤立状態で、水、電気、食料、生活必需品が届いておらず、余震も続いています。

 

遠隔地に住む私たちでも、これらの地域を支援することは可能です。

様々な方法で支援を行っている組織が多くあります。

 

１）セカンドハーベストジャパン：セカンドハーベストは地元団体や災害支援団体と連携し、埼玉県にある自社倉庫から、水、カット野菜、アルファ米他緊急食を輸送し、現地で暖かい食事を提供する活動を行っています。

 

２）ピースボート災害支援センター：現地で何が必要かを調査・把握して、復旧と救援を支援します。東日本大震災発生時にもすぐに現地入りした実績があります。

 

３）リトルオリーブ子供基金：困難な環境に置かれた子供たちのために活動する児童支援団体です。ウェブサイトには能登半島地震に対する情報の記載はまだですが、私自身で直接問い合わせをしたところ、今月8日から現地に入り、飲料水、暖かいスープ、オムツの提供などの支援活動を実施するとのことです。

 

上記のような組織をサポートすることで、被災地を支援することができます。

もしこの他に組織をご存じであったり、他に何かアイデアをお持ちであれば、ぜひ共有していただければと思います。

 

繰り返しになりますが、この度の能登半島地震により被災された皆様に心よりお見舞いを申し上げますとともに、1日も早い復興を心よりお祈り申し上げます。

I would like to express my deepest sympathies and condolences for the loss of so many precious lives and to everyone affected by the Noto peninsula earthquake and tsunami.

As people were celebrating the New Year on January the 1st, the massive earthquake in Noto and Ishikawa devastated and caused widespread destruction in many areas of this beautiful region of the Sea of Japan side, mainly in Ishikawa, Toyama, Niigata, Nagano and Fukui prefectures.

These beautiful areas of Japan are inhabited by generations of traditional craftsmen, sake breweries, farmers and fishermen and countless others.

Many towns and villages remain isolated and cut off from water, electricity, food and basic supplies and there are still hundreds that are unaccounted for. It’s mid-winter and many have no heating. The roads have been so badly destroyed that it’s challenging to access some of the remote villages and towns.

Some of you may be wondering just how you might be able to support the region.

There are lots of organizations helping in a variety of different ways.

I’ve included a few with some English information:

Second Harvest:

They are collaborating with local organizations to provide hot meals and food for those in need

Little Olive Foundation:

They are delivering much-needed water, soup, diapers, etc. and will provide ongoing long-term support.

Peace Boat Disaster Relief:

They are already on the ground providing hot meals and assessing needs for emergency relief.

Nancy Singleton Hachisu has set up a GoFundMe via her Instagram page.

Nancy is a prolific cookbook author and provides food artisan and Japanese crafts experiences. She and her son Andrew are on the ground helping directly.
